IMG_5022I get asked a lot of questions. About health.

About fitness. About weight loss….about living a healthy life. We are bombarded by tips and tricks and shortcuts from every angle. Well, heres a no-nonsense, slimmed down list of 5 things anyone can do to start living a healthier life.

#1 DRINK MORE WATER

We are made up of 60% water. We NEED water in order to keep our body fluids in balance. We need water for digestion, absorption, creation of saliva, protect our kidneys, help our muscles, it improves the way our skin looks…the list goes on and on. Let me tell you, if you have a headache it could be that you are dehydrated. If you have digestive issues, you could be dehydrated. If you are tired most days, you could be dehydrated. So how much water should we drink in a day? It is definitely more than the recommended 8 cups a day we have heard all of our lives. The mayo clinic recommends at LEAST 9 cups a day for women and 13 cups a day for men. The best part about drinking more water? It reduces that amount of calories you take in meaning, you could start to lose weight JUST by drinking more water.

IMG_3620#2 LEARN TO LOVE YOUR FRUITS AND VEGGIES

The nutrients in fruits and vegetables literally prevent cancer they are so good. They lower your cholesterol. They keep your digestive system running. When you go to eat a meal, the LARGEST part of your plate should be covered in vegetables. When you start eating more foods the way mother nature created them, you instantly feel better. When you eat something that is full of refined sugar, you are actually hurting your body. I know, I know, we all need to “treat” ourselves now and then. We can’t be perfect all the time. I try to live by the 80/20 rule. 80% of the time, I eat healthy and unpackaged, unprocessed foods. 20% of the time I give in to temptation and might have one thing that I know isn’t good for me but maybe it is good for my soul. This is a great way to prevent yourself from going nuts and binge eating for an entire week.

#3 EXERCISEIMG_3205

30 minutes a day. If you don’t have 30 minutes a day, you need to reevaluate your life. Go for a walk, go for a run, a bike ride, do some workout dvd in your living room, take the stairs instead of the elevator, park at the far end of the parking lot, play with your kids, play with your friends kids, do WHATEVER it takes to get yourself active. This is your life we are talking about here people. Use it or lose it.

#4 SLEEP

Guys, you need to sleep. You NEED 7-9 hours. Every night. This is non-negotiable. If you are one of those people who think they can function on 4 hours of sleep, you are living in a dream world. Literally. Memory problems? You might be missing out on the transfer of short-term to long-term memory that happens when we sleep. Also during sleep, we grow muscle, repair tissue, we improve our skins appearance. Beauty sleep is NO JOKE.

#5 STAY POSITIVE

There are a million reasons to stay positive. Positive people live longer (not even joking, google it). You get more work done when you stay positive. Your marriages last longer when you stay positive. You have more friends. You feel better about yourself. Sometimes you do have to fake it until you make it. But approaching each day with a positive outlook will changeyour life. This, out of all of the tips is the MOST important. I hope these tips helped you see that you have the ability to live a healthier life already.
