Hello, beautiful! Happy Friday! Last week my friend, Lauren & I had the pleasure of attending The Urban Nutcracker at the Boch Center Shubert Theater. This is the 18th year of Tony Williams’ show & the first time that live music has been incorporated into the scenes. Sure, you’ve probably seen the traditional Nutcracker but the Urban Nutcracker is a lively twist incorporating a variety of music & dance.
Entering the theater Lauren & I grabbed a glass of champagne with a peppermint stick at the concession. As we sipped on our holiday treats & the show began we were impressed by the jazz marching band that opened. More than 150 dancers of different backgrounds including ballet, tap, jazz, & more took the stage. Being a sucker for fashion facts, there were over 120 costumes made!
The role of Clarice was renamed to “Ruby” in memory of Williams’ late aunt. The setting takes place in Boston, they have even worked in the Citgo sign! You can expect beloved favorites like the waltz of the snowflakes & the sugar plum fairy with an urban maybe even tap or jazz twist. The way it ended completely melted my heart. Whether you attend with a friend like me or go with your family you will be guaranteed a good show! Make a night or afternoon of it by heading into the city & grabbing something to eat as well! Being a ballet, tap & jazz dancer myself growing up this performance inspired me to pick up dancing again. The Urban Nutcracker is a fabulous multicultural performance that has become a Boston holiday time must do.
